If you are a lover of arts and crafts, the annual three-day Holiday Festival at the Appalachian Center for Crafts in Cannon County Nov. 22-25 is an absolute must!
Situated down a lush wooded road toward Center Hill Lake at 1560 Craft Center Drive in Smithville, the craft center is a campus of Tennessee Tech University’s School of Arts, Crafts & Design and offers many immersive opportunities, especially during its annual Holiday Festival, which is free and open to the public.
A special preview day takes place Friday evening from 6-9 p.m., Nov. 22, with artwork in the center’s Gallery offered at a tempting 30 percent discount. Attendees may also enjoy dinner in the Blue Water Grille on the Hill with reservations available by calling 615-215-0315.
Saturday, Nov. 23, the holiday festivities kick off in earnest at 10 a.m. with Gallery artwork slashed by 25 percent, free hands-on craft activities for kids of all ages and special hands-on fine craft workshops taking place.
The hands-on workshops, which require participants under the age of 18 be accompanied by an adult, and are offered for a small fee, include the following:
*Forge Steel hooks – 2 hour sessions, minimum age 15;
*Dyeing and Painting with Indigo – 1 hour sessions, minimum age 10;
*Form Decorative Paper from Colored Pulps – 2 hour sessions, minimum age 16;
*Handblown Colorful Ornaments – 1 hour sessions, minimum age is 16;
*Texture Copper Ornaments and Add Patina – 2 hour sessions, minimum age 12; and
*Turning Wood Ornaments at the Lathe – 2 hour sessions, minimum age 18.
Registration for the workshops should be made online at www.tntech.edu/fine-arts/craftscenter. If room is available, walk-ups will be accepted.
Saturday kids’ crafts activities include the making of shrink ornaments using templates or drawing their own, craft stick ornament frames and shapes (snowmen, cars, trees and more), snowman tea lights, tissue paper poinsettias and air-dry holiday cutouts. In addition, meals, snacks and treats will be on hand at the Blue Water Grille on the Hill.
Festivities on Sunday, Nov. 24, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., include the 25 percent discount on artwork in the Gallery, guided studio tours throughout the campus with special demonstrations, and more kids’ holiday crafting activities.
