Associate’s degree and customer service experience required, with Library employment experience strongly preferred. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
The Smyrna Evening/Weekend Library Assistant is a support staff position and is a major provider of customer service, reference services, library services, computer assistance, and one-on-one instruction to library patrons. The Evening/Weekend Library Assistant is knowledgeable of print, non-print, and electronic resources and maintains library equipment; while providing a high level of customer service to students, faculty, staff, and community users. This position requires strong communication skills and the ability to work with numerous interruptions. This position requires a “2nd shift” evening work schedule primarily approximately 1:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday (other hours as needed). The Evening/Weekend Library Assistant participates as an effective and active member in support of the Smyrna campus and the library team.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Library Duties: Ensures that library services are available during scheduled library hours, including, but not limited to: using the Integrated Library System software to provide circulation services, such as checking in and checking out library materials plus shelving incoming items; maintaining the Reserve collection; processing interlibrary loans; and providing circulation support services, such as processing and weeding periodicals. Supervises all part time and student workers in the absence of the Smyrna librarian. Maintains library facilities, restocks items/supplies as needed, and ensures that the library has a neat and pleasant appearance and is safe for patrons and employees. Assists with library events and display preparation. Assists students, faculty, staff, and community users in properly using computers, software, printers, photocopiers, and other library equipment and services.
2. Reference Services: Assists and teaches students, faculty, staff, and community users how to access and acquire information using the online public access catalog, online databases, and print resources. Works regularly scheduled hours (evenings during the week, Saturdays, and other weekend hours as needed) at the Smyrna campus library.
3. Supervision: Supervises all student workers and volunteer workers in the absence of the Smyrna librarian insuring high level of customer service.
4. Other Library Duties: Records daily library statistics and gate counts. Assists in collecting and reporting library statistics data monthly to the Fayetteville Library Coordinator. Produces Motlow IDs as needed for students, faculty, staff, and community users. Provides support to the Smyrna Librarian by troubleshooting library equipment, scheduling maintenance and service requests, keeping inventory of supplies, and ordering supplies as needed. Responsible for signage relating to library hours or closings. Uses professional etiquette when answering the library phone, greeting students, faculty, staff, and community users entering the library, and responding to voicemail or email messages. Works effectively with all areas of the library, including distance education services. Must be able to lift and carry boxes weighing forty pounds and pushcarts of books and equipment from building to building or room to room. May travel to other campus locations as assigned or needed.
