Rutherford County Schools Prepare for 2020-2021 School Year and Summer Graduations

Rutherford County Schools Board of Education

The Rutherford County Board of Education has announced a school calendar and upcoming plans for the 2020-2021 school year while preparing to celebrate the end of this unprecedented year amidst COVID-19.

Rutherford County high schools will hold graduations beginning in late June. The intent of the plan to postpone graduations until the summer is to allow more spectators at the graduations, as long as CDC guidelines permit such.

The school district will monitor those guidelines as they evolve during the phased reopening of Rutherford County following the coronavirus shutdown. Parents will be kept informed as the situation continues to evolve.

Depending on the size of the facility being used for graduation and the size of the graduating class, schools will determine how many spectators per student will be permitted, in accordance with current CDC guidelines. Schools will communicate this information to parents prior to graduation.

All graduations will also be live-streamed on social media via Rutherford County Schools' Facebook page.

The Rutherford County Board of Education approved an updated calendar for the 2020-2021 school year. On April 30, 2020, the school board made the decision to reopen in August, eliminating most partial school days, including two-hour days and half days, in an effort to maximize instruction time. Only the last day of school remains a two-hour day.

The new calendar was announced to parents and guardians on May 1, 2020. Parents will be updated if any plans change or modifications are made. The schedule can be viewed online at rcschools.net by clicking on the RCS Academic Calendar. The 2020-2021 school calendar is available in both English and Spanish.

Athletics and other extra-curricular activities resumed June 1, in accordance with precautions enacted by the school district. Schools and coaches will be in direct communication with parents and guardians about specific details for various activities.

The summer food program will continue to offer free breakfast and lunch from June 1 through July 24 to anyone 18 and under during the COVID-19 shutdown. Details and a list of locations are available on Rutherford County Schools' website.
