WCHS freshman Lauren Slatton shows the plaque she won Monday as girls invitational champion at the Don Burke Memorial Golf Tournament.
Golf season has just begun for Warren County High School, but Lauren Slatton already has her game in full swing.
That’s because the Lady Pioneer freshman has been playing competitive golf since mid-March. When COVID-19 closed schools and forced many people into isolation, Slatten found her solitude on the golf course.
That work has paid immediate divides as Slatton was the top medalist last Thursday while competing in the Tullahoma Tournament at Lakewood Country Club. Slatton shot 79 to finish as the top female golfer from 15 competitors. In addition to golfing with the Warren County team, Slatton is active on the junior golf circuit. She competed at Legends Golf Course in Franklin on Saturday as part of the Elite Series, which is open to the top 18 female golfers in Tennessee. Slatton is currently ranked No. 18.
In boys competition, Warren County finished sixth out of seven teams in Tullahoma. Sophomore Chase Newby led the Pioneers with a score of 87.
WCHS sophomore Chase Newby, shown during a practice round at McMinnville Country Club, shot 83 to lead the Pioneer golf team Monday.
Alec Johnson shot 92, Colton Krech shot 95, and Beckham Scott shot 101 to combine for the team score of 375.
The golf team played Cleveland Country Club in East Tennessee Monday. The event has been renamed the Don Burke Memorial Invitational in honor of Bradley Central golf coach Don Burke. He died in June from COVID-19.
Slatton, who is currently ranked No. 18 in the state, claimed top honors with a round of 74. There were 25 girls who competed.
The Warren County boys finished 10th from a 12-team field.
Chase Newby was the top Pioneer golfer for the second time in a row with 83. Colton Krech shot 89, Sawyer Seymour shot 93 and Jax King shot 115 for a team score of 380.
Warren County will hit the links again this Thursday against Cumberland County at Lake Tansi.LATEST
