State Senator Janice Bowling (R-Tullahoma) and House Speaker Cameron Sexton (R-Crossville) recently announced that Van Buren County and Spencer will receive $811,000 through Community Development Block Grants. Bowling and Sexton made the announcement after receiving the information from the Department of Economic and Community Development.
Van Buren County will receive $286,850 to purchase equipment for firefighting equipment, including turnout gear, RIT-PAK Attack and accompanying air cylinders, thermal imagers, fire monitoring kits, and automated external defibrillators for use within the Van Buren County volunteer fire departments. The city of Spencer will receive $525,000 to provide housing rehabilitation assistance to a minimum of seven owner-occupied LMI households.
“This is a very competitive grant program,” said Bowling. “The improvements this grant will make are significant and reflect a greater investment in our community. We are very pleased that these funds have been awarded and congratulate our local officials for their successful application. We were pleased to support it.”
“This investment in Van Buren County is great news for our citizens,” said Speaker Sexton. “Effective partnerships between state and local leaders are critical to addressing unique needs, and I was honored to join with Sen. Bowling and our local officials to help secure this vital funding for our community.”
The funds were allocated under a procedure authorized by the Tennessee General Assembly. ECD administers the grant program based on priorities set at the local level where community needs are best known.
