Warren County's COVID count up 206%

By: James Clark -- Editor for the Southern Standard

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Warren County has increased 206% in the past two weeks, according to statistics from the Tennessee Department of Health.

Warren County has also climbed to three coronavirus deaths.

The county had 81 confirmed cases two weeks ago on Tuesday, July 7. Based on figures released Tuesday, July 21, Warren County now has 248 confirmed cases. That represents an increase of 206% in 14 days. The state says 81,944 COVID cases have been confirmed in Tennessee. Of those, right at 5%, or 3,798 people, have been hospitalized. There have been 871 deaths statewide.

The Upper Cumberland Medical Society is a group of physicians which practices in the 14-county Upper Cumberland area, which includes Warren County. In studying statistical data for the Upper Cumberland area since May 1, the organization reports a 964% increase in COVID cases here.

The Upper Cumberland Medical Society also points out younger patients are being infected. It says in Putnam County, the largest county in the 14-county area, 87% of new patients are under age 61. Of that percentage, 26% are under the age of 20.

“In a majority of cases, the COVID hospitalizations are not resulting in death, which is a good thing,” said Upper Cumberland Medical Society secretary Dr. James C. Gray. “But those patients are consuming resources and taking doctors away from other cases. The guy coming into the emergency room with heart attack symptoms, or the guy who needs an emergency appendectomy, are not receiving the same level of care as they did before because medical personnel are being stretched so thin.”
