TAC held the grand opening for the Young Artist gallery Jan. 31, featuring art of students from both East and West Middle School where the students, family and friends could come by and see the art on display free of admission.
While the pieces are primarily paintings and drawings, the art work from each of the students focuses on different styles of art. Some of the students’ pieces are aboriginal paintings with stories attached to them, some were in the style of Andy Warhol, oil pastels and point projections.
West Middle School art teacher Kathy McMillan said the art from West Middle School was produced by her art club students. McMillan said it was good seeing students who were passionate about art that they were willing to stay after school and learn.
For President of TAC Beth Thames, it is a chance for young artists to be able to partake in their first art exhibit and have a chance in the spotlight.
“The biggest thing for me personally that I like to lean into is those kids, it’s a big deal for them to show and they deserve their own time,” said Thames.
The art from East and West Middle School will remain on display in the Education Wing for the rest of February. Each month thereafter will feature art from a different school where the students will have their own opening galleries and have their work on display in the wing.
Anyone interested in seeing the art from any of the galleries can go to TAC Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission to the galleries is free for members and $5 for all non-members. Anyone with questions can contact the art center at 931-455-1234 or on their contact page at tullahomaartcenter.org.
